Petroleum Jelly as Lube: Is It a Good Idea?

Written by John Hanger

A lubricant is a liquid or gel used during sexual acts, such as intercourse and masturbation, to reduce friction between the penis and vagina, anus, or other parts of the body or applied to sex toys and condoms to ease penetration or reduce friction. Sexual lubricants increase pleasure and reduce pain, particularly when a partner experiences dryness or too much contraction during sexual activities.

Everyone can use lubricants, but not all are suitable for sexual activities. Water-based lubricants like aloe vera gel are common, cost-effective, easy to find, and generally safe to use when used as directed. This guide covers petroleum jelly as lube and better options, such as Zen aloe gel. Some household products can function as lubricants, but they can damage your skin and latex condoms too: products like petroleum jelly, cooking oil, body creams, and butter should not be used as sexual lubricants.

What is Petroleum Jelly?

What is Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum Jelly or Petrolatum, popularly packaged as Vaseline, is a mixture of mineral oils and waxes that is usually white or transparent. It is commonly used as a topical cream for healing the skin after a minor cut or burn. Naturally, it moisturizes and hydrates the skin. The purity of petroleum jelly depends on the process of manufacturing. Harmful ingredients may be found in unrefined petroleum jelly. It has been found to be beneficial in the following ways.

It acts as a barrier to keep dirt out and prevent moisture loss from the skin.
It prevents chafing of dry skin
It helps to reduce the risk of diaper rash.
It supports skin healing.
It is used as a lube for stuck objects.
It is often used to keep dry, eczema-prone skin moisturized.
It prevents the peeling of the skin. It can be applied to chapped lips or irritated eyelids during cold weather.

It is worth noting that while petroleum jelly can be used as a lubricant, it is not recommended as a sexual lubricant.
